Social Responsibility Means Environmental Action Not Business Public Relations
The rout of the unregulated free market capitalism supporters is not something to cheer about, but we must admit that 28 years ago there were warnings that the dismantling of the New Deal regulations on the financial system would have severe consequences.
For environmentalists this is an opportunity to remind people that one of the first actions of the new Republican President Ronald Reagan in 1981 was to order the removal of the solar panels from the roof of the White House. There is a connection between the environmental agenda of building an innovative green economy that greatly curtails our energy consumption and the needs of the broader economy for a more equitable economy that rewards achievement and work instead of speculation and greed.
So much for corporate social responsibility. Whenever NASRO attended the socially responsible business conference meetings we were left with that sinking feeling that this may be just about public relations and market share for many companies. This was certainly the case when we ran into the representatives of Exxon Mobil at theses meetings. It also reminded us of the hordes of drug company representatives that attended every health care conference throughout the 80's and 90's.
NASRO
sees significant progress on the development of alternative
technologies by private companies that provide us with the
tools to change the way we live and further our support
for the environmental restoration of our planet. NASRO sees
environmental protection and sustainable job growth as being
inseparably linked.
It
is now our job to start purchasing these new technologies.
The best example of this trend is the development of the
electric and hybrid automobiles. Fifteen years ago when
we started, this trend was a dream and now it is becoming
a reality. Now there is a six month waiting list for the
most popular hybrid car and even General Motors is selling environmentally friendly cars.
But
all of these changes supported by the vast majority of the
people of the United States are threatened by the oil men who lead our government and make us weaker by ignoring the dangers of climate change that are occurring due to global warming. Our water is being threatened by private companies that want to make us believe that their water is better for us when many times their water turns out to also come from a tap.
